Explanation of Treatments I Think are Necessary to Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle & Healthy Skin

Ionic Foot Detox

More and more evidence suggest that the toxins in our environment, foods, water, air, insecticides, hormones in meats, medicines, power lines, cellular phones, etc. can have a very negative effect on our bodies and our health.

The presence of toxins in our bodies in any amount is not healthful or beneficial and the accumulation of toxins is harmful and may lead to fatigue, general aches and pains, declining appearance, performance, decreased focus and mental sharpness, premature aging, allergies and many chronic diseases.

This 30 minute treatment can revitalize your health – giving you more energy and alleviating many symptoms of poor health due to toxicity in the body. Many people experience more energy – better sleep – less pain – blood sugar regulation – less allergy symptoms – relief from headaches – relief from indigestion and many other health benefits.

Have you ever wondered why you feel so good when hiking in the mountains, being close to a waterfall, or walking on the beach? Negative IONs may explain it! Negative IONs are molecules which have more electrons than protons thus giving it a negative charge. These IONs are created in nature as air molecules are separated due to sunlight, and moving air and water. Although the peace of being surrounded by nature is reason enough to go outside, evidence shows that negative IONs released in these environments can aid in your body's health and well-being.

To get the most out of the Ionic Detox, it is important to take in specific nutrients that will help the body better function to release toxins through urination, defecation and sweating. The goal is to bring the body back to balance and optimal health. Eat plenty of fresh veggies and fruits, limit sugar and refined sweets, limit over processed foods, identify and eliminate artificial sugars and potentially harmful ingredients from your foods, water, air, environment, etc. MOST IMPORTANT – DRINK THE PUREST WATER AVAILABLE. Remember – drink one half your body weight in water each day!!! If you weight 100 lbs then drink 50 ounces of water each day!!!

During the session, the water in the basin will always change color due to the electrolytic reaction involving the array, salt, water, minerals and impurities in the water. However, when the feet are in the water, the colors are also affected by oils being released from the sebaceous glands, the dead skin cells and the user's own acidity/alkalinity. Some of the neutralized toxins will also exit the body back out through the pores of the feet due to osmosis. An unusual amount of a particular color may indicate that a person has accumulated toxins in certain areas or from certain conditions and that the Ionic Detox is helping those areas.

Always remember that the presence of the negative ions in the body mainly helps the body rid itself of toxins through its normal processes of urination, defecation and sweating. Only some toxins leave the body through the pores of the feet. Therefore, color changes in the water should not be the main focus. Focus on HOW YOU FEEL.

A series of 6 or more treatments are recommended (depending on your health) and then regular scheduled monthly visits.

Back & Bacne Treatments

This treatment is a facial for your back. If you happen to have acne on your back (bacne) then we can treat that as well. Your skin is analyzed and a determination is made of exactly what you need.

Based on your diagnosis your back treatment could include cleansing, exfoliation, micro-dermabrasion, a masque, steam, a light chemical peel, LED Light Therapy, massage, oxygen treatment, sunscreen, etc.

While pimples can crop up anywhere on the body, they're most common on the face, chest and back. This is where you have the highest concentration of sebaceous glands (which produce an oily substance called sebum). These glands surround hair follicles (also called pores), which can get clogged by excess sebum mixing with sweat and dead skin cells, causing white or blackheads. If these are then infected by bacteria, they form pustules or cysts.

Though bacne occurs mostly in teenagers, more than 80 per cent of cases of adult acne occur in women because menopausal hormonal havoc can over-stimulate the sebaceous glands. It is possible to bid bacne goodbye.

Helpful Hints

Use a clean towel every time you shower, since they hold bacteria and can cause acne to spread.

Sun is a double-edged sword when it comes to bacne. While some studies suggest the anti-microbial action of UV rays can clear skin, sweat can cause blemishes to flourish — meaning you could come back from your holiday with more than just a tan.

Sunscreen can also trigger outbreaks in some people, but there's no point swapping your bacne for sunburn. Instead choose a light, non-comedogenic sunscreen containing zinc, which has been proven to be an effective topical acne treatment.

It might be a blessing that bacne is so hard to reach. Picking or squeezing spots introduces infection and can leave a scar.

Topical creams or gels containing benzyl peroxide — an antiseptic that controls the growth of bacteria — can help, though they can also make the skin very dry and sore. It's best applied in the evening and make sure you let it dry before putting on clothes.

Adult bacne is most common in those who exercise regularly, and tight-fitting gym gear is partly to blame. Acne-causing bacteria live in low oxygen conditions, so they thrive when follicles become blocked through a build-up of dead skin cells.

The swelling and inflammation is the body's normal way of dealing with the acne bacteria. This creates a pustule, which can then burst.

Loose-fitting silk or cotton clothing will allow your skin to breathe and prevent friction on the surface of the skin. It's most important to launder gym clothes between work-outs to prevent bacteria from spreading.

Long hair, especially when it's oily, can inflame bacne, so be sure to tie it up before you go to bed. And sleep in cotton sheets and pajamas, which won't irritate the skin. A decent night's rest is important: Bacne can be a consequence of high adrenaline levels. This doesn't just make it harder for you to switch off, but also leads to more sebum production.

LED Photo Light Therapy

Light Emitting Diode was developed in the 1980's by NASA to improve the healing of wounds and tissue growth in space. LED Technology uses 100% safe wavelengths of light to stimulate and increase cell turnover, elastin production, increases circulation and increases the production of collagen growth. Collagen helps plump the skin, while elastin firms the skin. The wavelength of visible and invisible light repairs and replenishes damaged skin cells. This all gives the skin back its youthful look.

Most devices for skin rejuvenation typically use visible red light at a wavelength of 660 nm – That penetrates tissue to a depth of about 8 - 10 mm – Making it more beneficial for treating problems close to the surface of the skin such as:

  1. Wrinkles and fine lines
  2. Tightening and firming (non-surgical face lift alternative)
  3. Blemishes and redness
  4. Anti-aging
  5. Age spots and hyper-pigmentation on face, hands, neck and décolleté
  6. Acne scars

Red light promotes the healing of the skin and so can be used effectively for many skin problems, without medication.

  1. Burns
  2. Acne Scars
  3. Rosacea
  4. Eczema
  5. Psoriasis
  6. Athlete's foot

This treatment can be used on all areas of the body and on all skin types. The face, neck, décolleté and back of hands are the most popular treatment areas. Each treatment is 20 minutes and can be done every other day.

Enzyme Chemical Peels

Don't be alarmed by the word 'chemical'. Some chemicals are natural plant based (botanical) and can be used on any skin type. They simply remove the existing dead skin cells on your skin. Many of these are considered 'lunch time' peels that allow you to return to work after the treatment.

There are other more aggressive chemical peels that treat specific skin conditions, such as hyper-pigmentation, acne, sensitive and aging skin.

Many times, when patients hear the word peel they expect to see visible exfoliation post-treatment. Frequently, exfoliation is at a cellular level and not apparent to the naked eye; however, the peels will create a tighter and firmer complexion and appearance. Treatments are formulated to preserve, promote and protect healthy skin, regardless of whether the patient sees visible exfoliation following treatment. In today's busy society, this progressive, rather than aggressive, approach is advantageous, as patients will experience minimal downtime yet still have outstanding results.

Microdermabrasion, also known as 'microderm', is a safe, non-chemical, non-invasive procedure and one of the most effective anti-aging treatments. It is a gentle skin resurfacing treatment that can rejuvenate and restore the natural glow to the skin, without the need for downtime.

The skin is constantly generating new skin cells at the lower layer (deep layer- dermis) and sending them to the surface (topmost layer- epidermis). As the cells rise to the surface they gradually die and become filled with keratin. These keratinized skin cells are essential because they give our skin its protective quality. But they are constantly sloughing off to make way for younger cells.

As we age the process of cell turnover slows down. Cells start to pile up unevenly on the skin's surface, giving it a dry, rough, dull appearance. Exfoliation is beneficial because it removes those cells on the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) that are clinging on, revealing the fresher, smoother and younger skin cells below. Some of the skin's visible imperfections like fine lines and sun damaged are removed. And now without stratum corneum layer, topical high-tech skin care products can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and help build collagen, which gives skin its youthful appearance.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion uses the vacuum technology and hand-held wand. There aren't any crystals moving through the tip. The diamond tip itself exfoliates the skin and the vacuum whisks the dead skin away. There are many different tips with various grades of roughness, and the esthetician chooses the correct one for your skin type and condition. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is much less uncomfortable, but achieves the same results. It is also usually better for sensitive skin.

Microdermabrasion is performed with very little discomfort. At the most, sensitive skin might experience a slight sensation resembling light sunburn. After treatment, the skin has a pink glow, and you can resume your normal activities almost immediately. The procedure can be done during lunch hour.

Microdermabrasion stimulates skin cell turnover
by removing the dead cells from the skin's surface, and also by causing "micro-damage" – or mini-trauma to the skin's surface that is not enough to be visible but sufficiently severe to trigger the arrival
of collagen and "repair cells" to the skin's surface. Because these "repair cells" are newer and younger, they improve the skin's appearance. Also, the removal of surface layers improves the effectiveness of topical anti-aging products by enhancing their ability to penetrate the skin.

How does microdermabrasion help acne and beneath-the-surface bumps?

Acne, blackheads and whiteheads result from sebaceous materials – or oil – clogging the pores, sometimes rupturing under the surface. By peeling away surface layers of the skin, microdermabrasion can remove the material trapped in many of the pores, further; the removal of surface layers improves the effectiveness of topical acne medications by enhancing their ability to penetrate the skin.

Age and skin condition determine the number of treatments required to achieve optimum result. A typical regimen consists of a series of four to eight treatments done at intervals of two to four weeks. Our skilled estheticians will recommend a program for you.

Do not get microdermabrasion if you have extremely sensitive skin, diabetes, vascular conditions like rosacea, skin inflammation, bacterial infections, lack of tactile sensation, keloid scarring, cuts and abrasions, or have gotten Botox within 72 hours. Other contraindications to microdermabrasion include sunburn, viral infections like herpes simplex, and acne. If you are taking anti-coagulant drugs.

Micro-Needling Therapy / Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)

Medi-Facials are more powerful than a traditional facial, but what if you want something stronger than a Medi-Facial? What if you want dramatic visible results but are not ready to make the financial and downtime investment of surgery? Then look no further than Collagen Induction Therapy otherwise known as Micro-Needling.

Micro-Needling's correct name is Natural Collagen Induction Therapy or Transdermal Delivery. Because it creates small channels into the deep layers of the skin which break up the old collagen strands, and stimulate the creation of new ones.

Although Micro-Needling may look a little aggressive, with its needles, it is actually much more gentle than you may think. This is because, unlike treatments like peels and laser resurfacing, Micro-needling does not harm the epidermis, the very top layer of skin. As the small handheld electric pen with its micro needles gently glides over the area being treated, it creates pin-point punctures. The pores of the top layer of the skin are parted without being damaged, leaving the epidermis, intact. It is the length of the needle used which determines whether or not anesthetic is required prior to treatment. The length of the needles also determines the results gained. Essentially, the rule of thumb is longer the needle the better the results (although it's not quite that simple as the depth of the skin in the area to be treated, its current condition, the area, the clients lifestyle must all be taken into consideration).

Micro-Needling is a rejuvenating treatment for the skin, leaving the skin revitalized and younger looking. By persistently triggering the healing process by using skin needling, the body continues to heal itself until the desired level of skin repair is achieved.

How Exactly Does It Work?

By the time we are 35 we will have lost half the collagen (the 'scaffolding' of the skin) in our skin and elastin (which gives our skin its elasticity), and quite simply Micro-Needling stimulates collagen and elastin production.

It is the controlled stimulation of the skin's ability to self-repair. The thousands of micro 'channels' created in the skin, not only trigger new collagen production but also allow any products applied to penetrate deep into the skin and heal the skin further.

Instant Plumping That's Locked into the Skin

Natural serums, oils and preparations (I am a fan of powerful concentrations of Retinol and Hyaluronic Acid) are applied immediately after Micro-Needling, as the channels the needles have made in the skin also allows the products to enter far deeper into the skin than they would without the skin needling being done first. This will significantly aid the success of the treatment as the skin's ability to soak up nutrients increases by whooping 3000% for an hour after the treatment!!

The All Important Healing Process

As the epidermis is only punctured, it heals quickly. However, the skin as a whole undergoes a three staged healing process after Micro-Needling, and because of this slightly more lengthy process the full results of the treatment can take up to one to fully show. Over a 3 to 6 month period the skin repairs itself naturally, and gradually the appearance of the skin improves dramatically. It is recommended that, for optimum results, you have three separate treatments spaced out 4-6 weeks apart.

Although it is still beneficial to have a one-off treatment, and it will still give results, just obviously not as significant, or as good, as having the two or three in the specified time period.

The three stages of skin remodeling are:

  1. Inflammation – This begins directly after the treatment; the skin is red and inflamed.
  2. Inflammatory response – Healthy tissue growth is stimulated.
  3. Tissue formation – The actual remodeling of healthy skin continues for up to 1 year.

We didn't age overnight…so why should we anti-age overnight?

Our expectations of treatments these days are very high. We want instant hits, quick fixes and immediate results.

We want considerably younger looking skin without paying out thousands for a face lift…and we want the results, not tomorrow, not today but NOW!! We don't take into consideration the fact that it has taken a lifetime of environmental exposure, bad lifestyle and diet choices, lack of exercise and bodily imbalance for our skin to reach its current state.

Micro-Needling: The Treatment That Keeps on Giving!

So after the immediate healing phase of Micro-Needling, we need to be a little patient to see the full, visible difference it will make to our skin in the long-run. A nice way to think of this is that it is the treatment that just keeps on working (and giving us results, as our skin gets better and better).

I believe Micro-Needling to be a great treatment that gives really amazing results.

Smoking delays skin healing

It is a good idea to stop smoking following aesthetic skin treatments, such as Micro-Needling, in order to help the skin to heal and for you to see maximum benefits to the treatment.

Smoking inhibits circulation, it lowers levels of oxygen in the blood which can cause failure or delayed healing of the skin, bone and other soft tissue. Smoking also increases the risk of wound site infections.

Dr. Hans Nasell, MD and Senior Surgical Consultant at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm says "In elective surgery [and invasive treatments] smoking cessation can become part of a plan [to] reduce risks during and after [treatment]. It was surprising, and encouraging, to see that even stopping smoking following surgery can offer significant benefits, including a nearly 50 per cent reduction in wound complications."

As we should all be aware smoking increases the premature aging of our skin, causing wrinkles, discoloration, lines, crêpeyness and sagging.

Skin rejuvenation treatments, like Micro-Needling, are much more likely to be effective in non-smokers. Benefits:

  • Acne scarring
  • Scars
  • Fine Lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Large Pores
  • Resurfaces and tightens the skin.
